Ten Worst Things About Pet Sitting
Below is my top ten worst things you might find about pet sitting. Taking care of animals is often a dream come true, but that doesn't mean that everything is always perfect. Since I've already told you all the great things about this business, I think it's only fair to share some of the not so great things.
- 1. Extremely Long Hours
- 2. Very Little Free Time
- 3. Pets can become ill or injured.
- 4. You may have to work even when you're sick.
- 5. It can be very lonely - during busy times you may go days without speaking to another human being.
- 6. Pets you love may move away or cancel service.
- 7. Pets may live in conditions that you don't approve of - this is very rare as most people who hire a pet sitter love their pets very much. However, occasionally you may be asked to care for pets that live in less than ideal conditions.
- 8. Lots of driving - you'll also probably start to hate gas stations.
- 9. Homes can become damaged - by pets, water leaks, or other unforeseen things, no matter how careful you are.
- 10. Pets you love may die (possibly even in your care). All the pets you care for will quickly start to feel like your own. Losing them can be heartbreaking.
This list of worst things is not meant to scare you away from starting your own pet sitting business. I've just included it to show you some of the difficult aspects of pet sitting, so that you can make an objective decision.
Even at it's worst, I still think this is one of the most rewarding careers you can have. After all, what other job can you do where you get to wear jeans and the clients give you sloppy kisses and do a happy dance every time you show up?
